Reddit and forums in AI answers: what the numbers mean
Citable · 31 October 2026 · 8 min read
Reddit is one of the most cited sources in AI answers, but its share depends on the AI tool and on how the figure is counted. Perplexity leans on it heavily, Claude cites it at effectively zero, and ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell sharply in 2025. Forums as a whole take a much smaller slice than the headline numbers suggest.
- Check the count first: the 40.1% Reddit figure counts answers that contain a Reddit link, not all citations.
- The engine changes the answer: Reddit is 46.7% of Perplexity's top-source citations in one measure and about 3% of Gemini citations in another.
- Forums are a small slice: a Yext study found 2% of AI citations came from forums.
- Threads get cited, not subreddits: Profound found 99% of Reddit citations in ChatGPT point to individual discussion threads.
Why do the Reddit numbers disagree?
The best-known figure comes from a June 2025 Semrush study reported by Astiva, which found Reddit in 40.1% of LLM references. That number counts answers containing a Reddit link. It is not a share of all citations, so it uses a different denominator.

Other write-ups describe the same 40.1% as covering more than 150,000 citations, placing Reddit ahead of Wikipedia at 26.3% and YouTube at 23.5%. Those two descriptions of one number already disagree.
The denominator changes the result again. One analysis puts Reddit at about 1.8% of all ChatGPT citations but about 11.3% of ChatGPT's top-10 sources, according to QuickSEO. A Search Engine Land report on 30 million sources ranks Reddit as the most-cited source across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Each study measures something different, so they can all hold at once.
When you read a share figure, ask what was counted, what the denominator is, and which AI tool was measured.
Does the AI tool change how often Reddit is cited?
Yes, more than the headline numbers do. The figures below come from different studies, so compare direction, not exact values.
| Engine | Reddit figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 46.7% of top-source citations (top-10 measure) | Profound, via QuickSEO |
| Gemini | About 3% of citations (Q1 2026) | Tinuiti, via the same QuickSEO analysis |
| ChatGPT | Close to 60% of responses in early August 2025, around 10% by mid-September | Semrush |
| Claude | Effectively zero | Higoodie's 2026 audit |
ChatGPT is the most volatile: Semrush measured the share collapsing within a single season. Claude is the outlier. The same Higoodie audit of four assistants found TikTok grew to 62% of Claude's social mix by mid-August.
Google looks different again. In a Suff Digital dataset of 164,629 citations, 27.8% of Google AI Overview citations pointed to user-generated platforms, against 0.2% of ChatGPT citations. Most of that went to social and video sites. In the same dataset, forums took 4.7% and Q&A sites 4.6% of AI Overview citations.

Even Google figures vary. A 300-query dataset from Lilach Bullock puts Reddit second at 20% of AI Overview citations. Cognizo's study, covering June to September 2026, puts it at roughly 4%.
Reddit's citations are also concentrating. Conductor data, cited by SaaS Intelligence, suggests Reddit's overall citation frequency fell about 50% while sole-source citations rose 31%. When AI cites Reddit, it increasingly relies on it alone.
What kind of Reddit content gets cited?
AI tools cite individual threads, not the platform. Profound found that 99% of Reddit citations in ChatGPT point to unique discussion threads, not subreddit pages, brand profiles or corporate content.
The cited threads are often modest. Semrush's Reddit study found that most cited Reddit posts have fewer than 20 upvotes and 20 comments, and that AI paraphrases Reddit content rather than quoting it.
Cited posts also skew old. Profound's data, as reported by QuickSEO, shows AI-cited Reddit posts averaging about a year old.
A thread that looks popular is not necessarily the one that gets cited.
Can a brand take part in Reddit and forums?
Reddit does not ban promotion outright. It bans spammy self-promotion, and hiding affiliation counts, according to RankCow's guide to Reddit's rules.
Disclosure is required. A third-party guide from ReddGrow says Reddit requires anyone who has been paid, or has a financial relationship with the promoted content, to disclose it.
Forum content also reaches AI answers directly. In May 2026, Google began showing Reddit, forum and social quotes inside AI Overviews under a "Community Perspectives" label, according to Nobori. The wording of a post can therefore appear in an AI answer.
Will Reddit's API and licensing changes affect citations?
Reddit says it will end free API and RSS access by March 2027. Startup Fortune reports that this affects independent developers and researchers who track Reddit data.
Licensing is shifting too. Memeburn reports that Google's deal was reported at about $60 million a year, that both the Google and OpenAI deals are up for renewal, and that Reddit is reportedly discussing usage-based fees.
None of this shows how citations will change. It does show that the Reddit content AI tools can use may change, which makes a strategy built on one platform fragile.
What does a brand control?
Forum threads are written by other people. A brand can join a discussion, but it cannot edit the thread or decide what others say.
A brand's own pages are different. In a Yext study of 6.8M citations, reported by QuickSEO, only 2% of AI citations came from forums, and 86% came from brand-controlled sources. In Cognizo's Google data, domains owned by a tracked software brand made up roughly 12% of citation volume, against roughly 4% for Reddit.
Forum threads are a channel a brand can join under the community's rules. Its own pages are a source it can improve directly. Which one carries more weight depends on the engine your buyers use. Next steps
- Ask your buyers' questions: run the 10 to 20 questions your customers would put to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, and note which Reddit or forum threads appear as sources.
- Check each thread's age and accuracy: cited posts often average about a year old, so an outdated thread may be shaping answers about your category.
- Read the rules before posting: check the community's self-promotion policy and disclose your affiliation, as RankCow's guide describes.
- Fix your own page first: if a thread answers a question your site could answer better, publish a clear, sourced page on that question.
- If you want to track which sources each AI tool uses for your site, Citable does it weekly, as described in how it works: it measures, finds out why competitors are picked, acts and checks.
Frequently asked questions
Does Reddit get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude?
It depends on the tool. Profound's top-10 measure puts Reddit at 46.7% of Perplexity's top-source citations, per QuickSEO, while Tinuiti puts it at about 3% for Gemini. Higoodie's audit found Claude citing Reddit at effectively zero. ChatGPT's share swung sharply during 2025.
Is it allowed to promote my company on Reddit?
Reddit does not ban promotion outright, but it bans spammy self-promotion, which includes hiding affiliation, per RankCow. A third-party guide says anyone paid or financially tied to the promoted content must disclose it. Each subreddit also sets its own rules.
Does upvote count affect whether AI cites a Reddit post?
Not in an obvious way. Semrush found that most cited Reddit posts have fewer than 20 upvotes and 20 comments, so a low score does not rule a post out.
Are forum citations in AI answers lasting, or do they change quickly?
They can change fast. Semrush measured ChatGPT's Reddit citations at close to 60% of responses in early August 2025 and around 10% by mid-September. Re-check your category regularly instead of relying on a single snapshot.
