Get your Shopify store cited by AI search.

When someone asks an AI “what’s the best … for …”, the answer quotes guides and comparisons, not product pages. Citable finds those questions, measures who gets cited and publishes sourced articles to your store’s blog.

Why AI cites (or skips) Shopify sites

Shopify serves pre-rendered HTML, and it publishes /sitemap.xml by itself, so AI crawlers can read your store. Whether they cite it depends on whether a page answers the buyer’s question: product pages describe one product, while buying questions are answered by guides, comparisons and “how to choose” articles.

Your Shopify blog is the natural home for those answers. Citable measures every week which questions AI answers with a competitor or a third-party page and writes the articles, with sources and links to your own products and pages.

What gets in the way on Shopify

Citable’s weekly audit recognises Shopify and, for each problem, gives you the steps in Shopify itself.

01

robots.txt comes from a theme template

To change it, edit the robots.txt.liquid template: Online Store → Themes → … → Edit code (create it from “Add a new template” → robots if it isn’t there). Once you replace it, it no longer updates by itself; the audit gives you text that keeps Shopify’s current rules.

02

Homepage title and description

They’re in Online Store → Preferences. For a page or product, open it and edit its search engine listing. The audit writes a proposal from what your page says.

03

Organization schema in theme.liquid

To add JSON-LD for your brand, open Layout → theme.liquid in Edit code and paste the block just before </head>. Duplicating the theme first, as Shopify recommends, gives you a backup.

04

One primary domain

In Settings → Domains, set the domain you want as primary; Shopify redirects the others to it, so AI and search engines see one address.

Connect Shopify to Citable

Takes a few minutes. Every article then arrives in your CMS, as a draft or published on its own, depending on how you set publishing.

  1. 1

Create your Citable account and add your site: website, competitors and buyer questions.

  2. 2

Open Settings → CMS & publishing for that site and choose Shopify.

  3. 3

In Shopify, go to Settings → Apps → Develop apps and create an app with the write_content scope.

  4. 4

Install it and copy the Admin API access token.

  5. 5

Paste your store and the token in Citable, then pick the blog.

  6. 6

In the same tab, choose how articles get published: scheduled with an approval window, or Drafts only.

What you need

  • A custom app in your store with the write_content scope
  • Its Admin API access token (shpat_…)
  • A blog in the store (we let you choose if there are several)

What Citable publishes on Shopify

Draft or live

Arrives hidden (unpublished) unless automatic publishing is on. To unpublish, hide it in Shopify.

Unpublish from Shopify

Articles are created hidden (unpublished) in the blog you choose. To improve one that’s already visible, Citable sends a new hidden article instead of editing it, because Shopify shows edits to a visible article straight away.

FAQ

Citable on Shopify: questions

What people ask before they start. If something’s missing, write to us.

Write to us
How do I connect my Shopify store?

Create a custom app in your store with the write_content scope, install it and copy its Admin API access token (shpat_…). Paste the store and the token in Citable and choose the blog.

Will Citable touch my products or theme?

No. It only creates and updates blog articles. Theme changes the audit suggests (robots.txt, schema) are made by you.

Can I count visits that come from AI?

Yes, with Citable’s cookieless script pasted just before </head> in layout/theme.liquid. Checkout pages use their own template and aren’t counted.

Can I unpublish from Citable?

Not from Shopify’s side: hide the article in Shopify. Unpublishing in one click is available on Framer, Webflow, WordPress.com and Notion.

Can Citable promise AI will cite my site?

No, and nobody can. Citable measures every week how often each AI mentions and cites you, with a confidence range, publishes sourced articles for the gaps and shows when a published URL starts being cited.
